Southeast Health brings Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy screening to the region
Southeast Health along with physicians from Pulmonary Associates in Dothan recently introduced Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy to the region to help diagnose lung cancer sooner.
Since then, Marvin Sexton, MD, and Walter Doty, MD, along with the Medical Center Pulmonary team have been successfully performing the minimally invasive peripheral lung biopsy with this Intuitive robotic platform. Diagnosing lung cancer early is crucial to providing the best treatment plan for the patient.
“A new American Lung Association report indicates Alabama ranks worst in the nation for lung cancer survival. Early diagnosis through screenings and access to innovative treatments can positively impact these numbers,” said Eric Hartigan, vice president of Ancillary Services at Southeast Health. “This robotic system can be a game-changer by giving us the ability to diagnose lung cancer earlier and begin treatment promptly.”
This equipment gives physicians the ability to biopsy small nodules that were difficult to reach in the peripheral lung, where 70 percent of cancer is found in the lung. This shortens the patients’ journey from biopsy to diagnosis to treatment.
