Elkins named Southeast Health Stroke Coordinator

Southeast Health is pleased to announce Shannon Elkins has been named the Medical Center’s stroke coordinator. Shannon’s experience in stroke care includes being the first nurse to serve in the neuroendovascular lab when the stroke program began in 2016.

The Medical Center is one of only four comprehensive stroke centers in the state, which makes the stroke coordinator position vital in maintaining our high standard of care.

Prior to being named stroke coordinator, Shannon, a stroke certified nurse (CNRN), served as nurse manager in the neuro critical care unit and third floor critical care unit. Shannon began her career at the Medical Center in 2007 as a nurse in the critical care unit. In addition to the endovascular lab, she served in several roles that prepared her to become the stroke coordinator, which included nursing positions in the NeuroSpine Center and the neuro critical care unit, as well as clinical educator in critical care before leaving for a brief period in 2019.

Shannon received her Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Florida Southern University in Lakeland, Florida. She then completed her Associates of Science degree in Nursing from Wallace Community College in Dothan. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree and her Master of Science in Nursing from Western Governors University in Millcreek, Utah.
