Curriculum

The Curriculum is Competency Based and it is comprehensive, competitive and flexible. As shown below a balanced mix of ICU rotations, wards and specialty rotations provide an outstanding academic program. Selectives are introduced early in the program enabling candidates interested in fellowship training to have early exposure. The General Medical Inpatient Service at Southeast Health is designed to enable residents to evaluate and manage patients with a broad range of medical problems in the intensive and non-intensive care settings. The resident teams are afforded the opportunity to manage patients admitted to Southeast Health from a variety of different settings including the Emergency Room, offices of private practitioners and transfers from outside institutions. The rotations are structured to ensure that each resident team has first contact with patients who are admitted to the hospital. The teams work collaboratively from admission to discharge, under the supervision of the attending physician. The resident will attend morning report and noon conferences. Minimum 90 percent attendance for noon conferences and 85 percent attendance for morning reports is mandatory.

Curriculum and Rotations:
The Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the 4 + 1 rotation schedule and provides flexibility in the PGY2 & PGY3 years to focus on the resident’s future career plans.

PGY-1 PGY-2 PGY-3
2 ICU 1 ICU 1 ICU
4.5 Wards 3 Wards 3 Wards
1 Cardiology 2 Nigh Float/Admitter 2 Night Admitter

The order of these four rotations is flexible and may be scheduled based on the interest and needs of each resident, e.g. for early fellowship planning. The resident may choose 4 of the following five specialty rotations to tailor their future needs: Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Pulmonary Medicine

Tri-Lective:
This is a PGY3 year rotation that a resident would consider if his or her future is in either Hospitalist medicine, Primary Care or Urgent care. This rotation allows the resident to experience Consultation Medicine, Emergency Medicine or any Ambulatory experience in the third year. The four weeks may be divided into 2 weeks of two each, or four weeks of one.

*PGY1 Night Float is an opportunity for 1st year residents to see the process of night float without having their own patients. They will work side by side with a PGY2.
