Transitional Year residency program overview

Application Requirements

Eligibility:

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the Southeast Health Transitional Year Residency Program:

1. Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) within 5 years of application; or,

2. Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) within 5 years of application; or,

3. Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada within 5 years of application, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:

  • Holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or,
  • Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or,

4. Graduation from a medical school outside the United States and completion of a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

5. Passed USMLE and/or COMLEX step exams on first attempt. Program is seeking competitive candidates with at or above national average USMLE AND COMLEX scores.

Requirements:

1. Candidates must be eligible for an Alabama state provider license, are authorized to work in the United States at the time of appointment and meet applicable essential abilities requirements of the program.

2. All applicants are required to meet the requirements for and obtain Alabama provider licensure prior to the start of training. In general, this requires passage of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX) 1 and 2

3. Graduates of medical schools outside the US and Canada (IMGs) are required to have passed all examinations required for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification, including USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or their equivalents, before they may be considered for final selection to a residency training program.

We accept applications for our ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Residency Programs during the traditional ERAS application cycle.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Southeast Health Transitional Year Residency Program is to provide residents with a well-balanced educational program covering multiple clinical disciplines designed to facilitate the preparation for a specific specialty. For those who have not yet made a decision to pursue a specialty, we will provide opportunity and support for exploring careers in primary care. It is the vision of the Southeast Health Transitional Year residency faculty to train residents who progressively improve the individual and societal practice of medicine by incorporating evidence-based medicine.
