Our History, Mission and Vision

Southeast Health is a community-based academic health system, which includes the Medical Center, Medical Group, Foundation, Statera Network and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM). Southeast Health, established in 1957 as a county hospital, has flourished into the region’s largest not-for-profit hospital and primary care and specialty clinic network; a teaching hospital with internal medicine, transitional year and pharmacy residency programs; and the state’s first osteopathic medical school. Since its beginning, Southeast Health has been dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for residents in southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia and the Florida Panhandle, as well as educating students from throughout the nation.

The Medical Center is a 420‑bed regional referral hub serving more than 460,000 residents. It is one of four certified Comprehensive Stroke Centers in Alabama and is recognized as a Level II Trauma Center and Chest Pain Center. Southeast Health also operates the region’s only Level III NICU and its only inpatient Pediatric Unit.

Governed by the Houston County Health Care Authority, a volunteer board, Southeast Health benefits from strong strategic oversight and local decision making. Named a Best In-State Employer by Forbes, the health system has approximately 3,500 employees making in the largest employer in Houston County and one of the largest in the region. Southeast Health is supported by a medical staff of over 200 physicians representing virtually every medical specialty.

As a growing organization, Southeast Health is currently undertaking a major expansion that will double the size of its emergency department and add 52 new inpatient beds. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.
