Transitional Year Residency Program Overview:
Application Requirements
Eligibility:
Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the Southeast Health Transitional Year Residency Program:
1. Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) within 5 years of application; or,
2. Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) within 5 years of application; or,
3. Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada within 5 years of application, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
- holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or,
- holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or,
4. Graduation from a medical school outside the United States and completion of a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
5. Passed USMLE and/or COMLEX step exams on first attempt. Program is seeking competitive candidates with at or above national average USMLE AND COMLEX scores.
Requirements:
1. Candidates must be eligible for an Alabama state provider license, are authorized to work in the United States at the time of appointment and meet applicable essential abilities requirements of the program.
2. All applicants are required to meet the requirements for and obtain Alabama provider licensure prior to the start of training. In general this requires passage of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX) 1 and 2
3. Graduates of medical schools outside the US and Canada (IMGs) are required to have passed all examinations required for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification, including USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or their equivalents, before they may be considered for final selection to a residency training program.

Step 1: Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
ERAS collects the following information:

- Medical School Transcripts
- USMLE Licensure Exam Transcripts (Required)
- Medical School Performance Evaluations (Dean’s Letter)
- Minimum of 3 Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
- ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
After you select our program code, the application is available to our department electronically, for review.
Please visit the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) to start your application.
Step 2: Interview Invitations
An invitation for an interview will be sent out beginning October 1, 2024 through the ERAS scheduling system. Applicants will have 72 hours to respond to the interview invitation before it will be offered to another candidate. Rolling interview invitations will continue until December 30, 2024 for those placed on our waitlist.
Candidates not initially invited for an interview will begin receiving an email between October 16, 2024 and January 8, 2025 indicating their application status (waitlist or rejected).
Applicants are selected for interviews based on a selection rubric which involves various aspects of each application. During this busy time of year, phone calls will not be accepted, please email if you have questions regarding your application or the interview process.
Step 3: The Interview
Interviews will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays

- January 16th

Individual Interviews
Each applicant will participate in two separate interviews.
Interview Day
Morning interview sessions begin via Zoom at 8:00 am central time and will conclude by 12:00 pm Central time.
Afternoon interview sessions begin via Zoom at 1:00 pm central time and will conclude by 5:30 pm Central time.
Facility Tour
A tour of the hospital and GME clinic will be given to applicants when they are not interviewing.
Step 4: The Match
All PGY-1 positions are offered through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).
The department follows the policies and agreements set by the NRMP.

Salary & Benefits
This program provides a competitive salary, with a comprehensive benefits package for residents enrolled in graduate medical education. Residents are provided with health insurance, vision, dental, prescription benefits, life insurance, disability insurance, and professional liability insurance.
Resident Salary:
Health/Dental/Vision Insurance:
Residents are eligible to enroll in single or family coverage under the Health Reimbursement Account Plan, administered by United Medical Resources, during the first thirty (30) days of employment. Premiums are paid a month in advance, and coverage is carried through the last day of the pay period you work as an eligible employee. Health/Dental/Vision Insurance coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following your hire date. Additional information can be provided by contacting the Human Resources Office at 334-793-8001.
Child Care:
A child development center for children of Southeast Health personnel is located on the Southeast Health campus. Admission is open to eligible children, ages 6 weeks through 14 years.
Parking:
Free parking is provided on the Southeast Health premises. Patrol of the facilities, unlocking doors, escort to vehicles, assisting with cars that will not start at night, helping with flat tires, lost and found department and general response to problems are part of the assistance provided by Southeast Health Security.
Meals:
Access to appropriate food services is provided free of charge when on duty.
Exercise Facility Access:
The Southeast Health Fitness Center is located on the hospital campus and is available to Southeast Health employees for a reduced membership fee.
Lab Coats:
Residents are issued two white coats for their PGY 1 year.
Vacation:
One 4-week block.
Call Rooms:
Residents are provided eight secure and safe sleeping rooms, computer area, kitchen, break room and an area with secure lockers.
Resident Library:
Learning resources are available 24/7 to each resident.
Exams and Professional Memberships:
The program provides funding for the following exams:
USMLE Step 3 and/or COMLEX Part 3, first attempt.
Education Leave:
The program provides educational leave to take exams and for conferences as approved.
Alabama Medical License:
Initial licensure is paid by the program for the first year. Subsequent licensure renewals are the responsibility of the resident.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program is to provide comprehensive Graduate Medical Education training in Internal Medicine to eligible applicants. Through research and improving quality of care for patients, our residents will provide the Wiregrass community with competent physicians that are focused on population health guided by evidence-based medical care to improve the quality of life for their community. Upon completion of the program, physicians will be trained for future leadership responsibilities and for the challenges presented by the ever-changing health care market.
