Eligibility:
Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to the Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program:

1. Graduation from a medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) within 5 years of application; or,

2. Graduation from a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) within 5 years of application; or,

3. Graduation from a medical school outside of the United States or Canada within 5 years of application, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:
holds a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment, or,
holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a US licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or,

4. Graduation from a medical school outside the United States and completion of a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

5. Passed USMLE and/or COMLEX step exams on first attempt. Program is seeking competitive candidates with at or above national average USMLE AND COMLEX scores.

Resident Requirements:
1. The program director must ensure that candidates are eligible for an Alabama state provider license, are authorized to work in the United States at the time of appointment and meet applicable essential abilities requirements of the program.

2. All applicants are required to meet the requirements for and obtain Alabama provider licensure prior to the start of training. In general this requires passage of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination of the United States (COMLEX) 1 and 2.

3. Graduates of medical schools outside the US and Canada (IMGs) are required to have passed all examinations required for Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certification, including USMLE Steps 1 and 2 or their equivalents, before they may be considered for final selection to a residency training program.

Resident Selection:
1. The Program will select trainees among eligible applicants on the basis of training program-related criteria such as their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities such as motivation, integrity, and professionalism.

2. The Program will not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, veteran status or any other applicable legally protected status.

3. Before accepting a resident who has completed residency and/or fellowship training at Southeast Health or an outside training program, or who is transferring from another program, the program must obtain verification of previous educational experiences and a summative competency-based performance evaluation of the transferring resident.

Matching:
1. The Southeast Health Internal Medicine Residency Program will participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) Match, or other organized matching program where such is available in their discipline and to the fullest extent possible.

2. The program director and coordinators will review the terms and conditions of the applicable Match Participation Agreement for their specialty each year and comply with applicable Match policies and the Match Commitment.

3. The NRMP All-In Policy requires a program participating in the Main Residency Match to register and attempt to fill all positions through the Main Residency Match.

4. The program director is prohibited from offering positions to ineligible applicants, and must use the Applicant Match History in the Registration, Ranking, and ResultsSM (R3SM) System to determine an applicant’s eligibility for appointment.

Southeast Health Internal Medicine offers 16 PGY-1 positions each year. These appointments are awarded through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

Step 2: Interview Invitations

An invitation for an interview will be sent out beginning October 23, 2024 through the ERAS scheduling system. Applicants will have 48 hours to respond to the interview invitation before it will be offered to another candidate. Rolling interview invitations will continue until December 2, 2024 for those placed on the waitlist.

Candidates not initially invited for an interview will begin receiving an email between October 28, 2024 and December 8, 2023 indicating their application status (waitlist or rejected).

Residents and the IM Coordinator will present a virtual tour of the hospital and GME clinic when they are not interviewing.

All PGY-1 positions are offered through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

The department follows the policies and agreements set by the NRMP.

The Curriculum is Competency Based and it is comprehensive, competitive and flexible. As shown below a balanced mix of ICU rotations, wards and specialty rotations provide an outstanding academic program. Electives are introduced early in the program enabling candidates interested in fellowship training to have early exposure. The program is dedicated to research and scholarly activity and a rotation with detailed clinical research training curriculum embedded in the first and second year. The General Medical Inpatient Service at Southeast Health is designed to enable residents to evaluate and manage patients with a broad range of medical problems in the intensive and non-intensive care settings. The resident teams are afforded the opportunity to manage patients admitted to Southeast Health from a variety of different settings including the Emergency Room, offices of private practitioners and transfers from outside institutions. The rotations are structured to ensure that each resident team has first contact with patients who are admitted to the hospital. The teams work collaboratively from admission to discharge, under the supervision of the attending physician. The resident will attend morning report and noon conferences. Minimum 90 percent attendance for noon conferences and 85 percent attendance for morning reports is mandatory.

Curriculum and Rotations:
The Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the 4 + 1 rotation schedule that consists of 10 (four week) inpatient/subspecialty elective rotations throughout the academic ear with one-week outpatient rotations between each inpatient rotation.

The months with the * may be interchanged to tailor desires for getting an early start for fellowship.

Electives:
Available electives to be chosen are Cardiology, Pulmonology, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Rheumatology, Nephrology, Hematology, Oncology, Sleep Medicine, Infectious disease. Neurology is a mandatory elective.

Ambulatory Electives:
Ambulatory Primary Care, Dermatology, Allergy/Immunology, Non Operative Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Office Gynecology, Office Nephrology

Call Schedule:
There is no call or no night float in the first year.

Residency Salary & Benefits

This program provides a competitive salary, with a comprehensive benefits package for residents enrolled in graduate medical education. Residents are provided with health insurance, vision, dental, prescription benefits, life insurance, disability insurance, and professional liability insurance.

Health/Dental/Vision Insurance:
Residents are eligible to enroll in single or family coverage under the Health Reimbursement Account Plan, administered by United Medical Resources, during the first thirty (30) days of employment. Premiums are paid a month in advance, and coverage is carried through the last day of the pay period you work as an eligible employee. Health/Dental/Vision Insurance coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following your hire date. Child Care:
A child development center for children of Southeast Health personnel is located on the Southeast Health campus. Admission is open to eligible children, ages 6 weeks through 14 years.

Parking:
Free parking is provided on the Southeast Health premises. Patrol of the facilities, unlocking doors, escort to vehicles, assisting with cars that will not start at night, helping with flat tires, lost and found department and general response to problems are part of the assistance provided by Southeast Health Security.

Meals:
Access to appropriate food services is provided free of charge when on duty.

Exercise Facility Access:
The Southeast Health Fitness Center is located on the hospital campus and is available to Southeast Health employees for a reduced membership fee.

Lab Coats:
Residents are issued two white coats for their PGY 1 year and one each for PGY 2 and 3.

Vacation:
PGY-1, PGY-2 and PGY-3 will have 21 vacation days per year.

Call Rooms:
Residents are provided eight secure and safe sleeping rooms, computer area, kitchen, break room and an area with secure lockers.

Resident Library:
Learning resources are available 24/7 to each resident.

Exams and Professional Memberships:
The program provides funding for the following exams:

• USMLE Step 3 and/or COMLEX Part 3, first attempt;
• IM-ITE Exam, annually

Alabama Medical License:
