SAMC Welcomes Inaugural Residency Class

SAMC’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program welcomed its first residency class July 1. These 13 newly graduated medical students will work 13 four-week blocks yearly. The blocks include patient care floors, critical care, emergency medicine, and subspecialties such as pulmonology, nephrology and hematology/oncology.

In addition to their rotations, they will also complete a research project. This class will focus on quality issues and ways to improve patient care. A continuity clinic, Internal Medicine Clinic, will open July 16. Through the Internal Medicine Clinic, residents will provide care to people who have no access to a primary care physician.

The three-year residency program is accredited by ACGME and is administered through GME under the leadership of James Jones, DO, Director of Medical Education and Designated Institutional Official (DIO).

Tom Tosto, MD, serves as SAMC’s Internal Medicine Residency Program Director. Elie Razzouk, MD and Arash Velayati, MD, the Associate Program Directors, will work with Dr. Tosto to oversee the integration of residents into our organization.
